Subject: High quality speech demonstration

    Several people have complained about the quality of the
voices included with the new apple speech manager.  I'm not sure
about the legality of distributing the higher-quality voices
found on the Apple Developer's CD, so I don't want to try, but
there's still hope:

    This file is a System 7 sound file containing a sample
of the "Alexander" voice from the Gala-Tea collection.  The
text he's reading is from the MacWorld press release about the
new AV macs.  This sound was generated using the SpeakEasy
application on a Macintosh IIcx.

One of them is rather large and may cause you problems if you are
memory-challenged. Use Resedit to hear it or a sound utility

      The file that I sent you can be described as follows:

Midnight Oil Beep:

      This is an 'snd' file that contains the first few notes of Midnight
Oil's "Beds are Burning" from the "Diesel and Dust" album.  It was directly
transferred from the CD using QuickTime v1.6 and a movie to snd converter
that I wrote.  I found that this beep is pretty cool and not that
annoying.

Is this what you wanted?  Sorry about the mix up.

Here are some more Sound Tracker songs.  Since a new folder was created
on Sumex (sounds/st), I decided not to archive these in an assortment.

I didn't compose these songs, key them in.  I did download them from the
Amiga archives and use Mac LHa to decompress them and then convert them
to the Mac SoundTracker format.

I am told that some Macs have had problems with MacLHa and that
SoundTracker works only on the 020, 030, 040 computers.

Boyz N The Hood Sounds

   This package features over a dozen sounds that were recorded from
the movie "Boyz N The Hood".  Most of these sounds are about 4 seconds
or less in length.  This package is great if you are using SoundEdit, or
even better, SoundMaster.  If you don't have a file compression software,
don't worry--this StuffIt file is a self-extracting file.

   This software should remain on SUMEX for 90 days (hopefully!)

   Please be aware that a few of the sounds didn't come out so well--
the videotape that I recorded from didn't have very clear sound quality.

Subject: "Burn My Mackintosh" Sound

While listening to a new release of an old Count Basie
(that's jazz, for you younger readers) recording from
1937, I heard the announcer say, "O mother, burn my
mackintosh" after a particularly hot number.  At first
I was quite startled, then I remembered that a mackintosh
was a raincoat made from rubberized cloth, and is spelled
differently than our favorite computer.

This makes a nice shutdown or restart sound.

The sound is from the song "The Count Steps In," as
sold in the CD "Count Basie, The Golden Years, Volume 1,"
recorded in the Savoy Ballroom in New York City on 3/6/37.

        This is the merest snippet of the legendary Duke Ellington and
his orchestra, and his absolutely awesome tenor sax, Paul Gonsalvez,
playing "Caravan" (what honey is to the tongue, what satin is to the
touch, ...).

        And then, some absolutely inexcusable modifications (first
suggested to me by a malfunction in my tape player).  "Caravan x16"
makes a good beep; "Caravan x8" will lift you right out of your seat
and turn your spine inside out - at least, if you're expecting the
real thing!

        Enjoy (or suffer, depending upon which one you play...) with
any sound tool, or just drop into your System 7 system file (after
self-extracting and de-bin-hexing).

"Communion" may have been the worst film I've ever seen, yes, even worse
than "Plan Nine from Outer Space," "The Blob," and "Robot Monsters."
Really.  It was just unbelievable.

But I rented it _twice_, so I could capture these samples from it.  They're
all taken from a group psychology session of people who think they've
been visited by these alien beings.  Two are from the same guy, who's an
atrociously bad actor;  he's talking about how the media ignores and
laughs off stories of UFOs.  The samples are "It may sound like a
cliche, but [awkward pause while he swallows] these visitors do come in
gigantic ships," and "But, um, [awkward pause while he swallows] the
joke's on us."  The third's from a ditzy woman who's been, like
everyone else, examined by the aliens:  "I didn't ask for a rectal probe,
Laurie!  It's not funny!"

In these nine seconds, you get the best parts of the film.  Save
yourself a dollar--don't rent it, just download the samples.

The compact pro archive includes the following sounds:

- "Oh my gawd!..." (blond girl)
- "Oh my gawd!..." (red-head girl)
- "Oh my gawd, what have we done?" (all three girls in unison).

The first one makes a great intro for an answering machine's outgoing message
if you're into that kinda nerdy thang...

In April of 1990, Apple released a CD-ROM entitled the "Technical Support
Information Source Sampler." It consisted of a lot of product demos and was
mostly uninteresting. Thanks to the wonders of science, two audio tracks are on
the same CD. One features columnist/pundit John C. Dvorak mumbling something
about the future of computers and how everything becomes obsolete... In the
course of his diatrib^H^H^H^H^H^H^Hnarration, he begins speaking phrases to use
as the "beep sounds" for your computer. He says, "If you're going to be insulted
by your computer, it might as well be me doing the insulting."

So, I have digitized the Dvorakian beeps, so you can have a little bit of Dvorak
in your computer too. Sounds attached are:
Switch colas.
That's wrong.
Guess again!
What a blunder.
What a clown!
Is this FUN for you?
Read the documentation.
I don't think so!

I am not responsible for any harm that may come to you or your computer for

pine trees, creeks, and ponds, and at night the chorus of
crickets -- thousands of them -- can just about keep a person
awake.
    By holding the Mac LC's microphone to the window, I was
able to prepare this recording.  The fidelity is good.  Put the
file in a loop and you'll experience what we have to go through to
try to sleep around here!

    "Yep, sonny, I remember that East Texas flood of '92 very
well.  3 1/2 inches of rain pert nearly twenty minutes, I
reckon."
    And that will be the conversation I will have with someone
when I am old and grey and Macs will be nothing but a mere
appliance instead of the hacker machine that we all love.
    We did have that much rain, and the road in front of the
house would have made the Missippi take notice.  Outside of my
window was a frog, a loud frog.  These frogs NEVER come this
close to the house until the Flood of '92.
    Using my LC's microphone, I recorded the little croaker and
the fidelity is very good.  If you listen carefully, you can hear
the flood waters outside.  In fact, the fidelity is so good
that I plugged in my guitar amp speaker, aimed it out the window,
had the LC loop the croaks and GREAT was the confusion thereof
for the other toads.  There is no telling what happened to the
little feller that was outside my window--probably still hopping
and heading for New York.
    Now what purpose would anyone have in downloading this file?
Well, there are enough croaks on here that you could edit the
sound file, copy the particular croak that you want, and have one
very, uh, interesting beep, or bad disk sound (SoundMaster 1.7.3).
    The East Texas Flood Frogs of '92 is in StuffIt format.
    System 7.0.1 sound format.

This is a resubmission of "Essence of Ives."  I have learned that
the original submission was corrupted, apparently by saving it as a
compressed AIFF instead of the "normal" format.  Oh well.

This is a sound file containing a snippet of music from the U.S.'s
first great composer, Charles Ives (1874-1954).  Specifically, it's the
final three measures of his second symphony.  I think they sum C.I. up
quite nicely.

This file was saved in Audio Image File format (AIFF, requiring
Sample Editor 1.0.2 or a similar sound utility on the Mac or other
platform), archived with Compact Pro 1.32 (requiring Compact Pro,
Extractor, or other compatible de-archiver), and binhex'd (requiring
mcvert, BinHex 4.0, Compact Pro, or other compatible de-hexer).

The AIFF format allows "extra-sonic" information such as copyright
to be included in the data instead of in a Finder Info box (where
it disappears with the first desktop rebuild).  Sample Editor will
convert an AIFF into a usable system sound file ("sfil") that can
be played from the desktop under System 7.

     This System 7 sound file is a clip from Mike Oldfield's
"Foreign Affair" which hails from the Crises CD album.
    If you are a computer history archive freak, then you'll
appreciate this clip.  Many of you are Atari STers who have
migrated to the Macintosh in the past three years and you
may recall the Atari Media-Graphics disk that came with the
second factory run of the Atari ST back in 1985.  The
"Foreign Affair" song was included, in digitized form, on that
disk, even though this was back in 1985.
    Well, on a Mac, this song clip sounds very good.  Decompress
it with StuffIt Lite or StuffIt Expander.  If you are a former
Atari STer, it will certainly stir up some memories.

Two others are in German and let you hear the German Minister of the
Interior at the Ambassy in Prague talking to 3000 East-German
refugees (November 1989). The second is a West-German citizen shouting
'The Wall must go', some days before the Berlin Wall was opened to
East-Germans.

    Here is a short sound clip taken from the nightly news on
September 29, 1992.  The sound is George Bush's challenge to
Bill Clinton for the Sunday debates where Bush says

           "Let's Get It On!"

I think that it might make a pretty good start up sound.

The file was binhexed and compacted using Compact Pro 1.33.  The
sound was recorded on a Mac IIsi using the sampling program
Sample Editor.  The sound itself is not in any compression format
and is about 18k.

Of course the sound is free, so enjoy!

Dear Moderators,


     This archive contains two versions of the same sound from the beginning of
"Terminator II - Judgement Day."  The sounds are of an Semi-truck starting it's
engine, releasing it's brake, and slowly pulling away.   The sound file "Mac
Truck (short)" lasts about 10 secs. and "Mac Truck (long)" lasts about 20 secs.
Obviously, either of these sounds would make excellent startup sounds -
particularly  for those of you who own a "Big Mac" (i.e., Quadra, IIvx, etc.).

     I used the built-in mic on my IIsi in conjuction with the application
"Sample Editor" to record the sounds from an audio tape played on my stereo.
They were then exported from Sample Editor (using the "Export Sound As..."
command) in a 3:1 MACE compression format.  Oh, and the sounds are in System 7
format (of course!).

     I hope you enjoy the sounds!  Any questions or comments are welcome.

Attached is a sound of my miniature chihuahua growling at the microphone of
my Mac Quadra 950!  It makes for a really cute Empty Trash sound in
SoundMaster!

This was sampled at 22Khz in Sample Editor and then exported using Mace 3 to
1 compression.  This reduced the 176K file to 70K without any real loss in
clarity.  It is Binhexed.

My wife was somewhat indignant that someone should upload the sound of his
dog, and she absolutely refuses to let me install Quack as the alert sound on
her new Macintosh.  So, for her benefit, I made a recording of our cat, Nell.
She has now been edited down to a very compact alert sound, so I figured I
would make her available for public distribution.

Oingo Boingo?  What is it?

Oingo Boingo is a band which started in California in the early 1980's
as best I can figure.  Never quite making the national scene, they
have enjoyed constant popularity in their home state.  I began
listening to the group in late 1982 and have been hooked ever since.

Their music is unlike any other.  My best guess would put it at a mix
of latino beat fused with disco on acid.  Very singable and danceable.  The
lyrics are often very shallow bordering on very deep, satirizing our society
to professing societal paranoyia.

The lead singer, Danny Elfman, has gained popularity for producing much of the
music for Batman, Dick Tracy, Edward Scissor Hands, the Simpsons theme, theme
song for Wierd Science, and many more.

Due to popular frustration with the new Sound Manager 3.0,
enclosed is SAMPLED-SIMPLE-BEEP-SND.HQX, a SAMPLED version
of our tried-and-true "simple beep."  It is in System-7
sound format, sampled at 8-bits, 22KHz, mono.  This was
created by connecting the sound-output from one Mac into
the sound-input of another.  Cleaned up slightly in Sound
Edit Pro.  Just drag it into your SYSTEM file, select it in
your Sound control panel device, and away you go.

For anyone wondering WHY...Sound Manager 3.0, which does
all sorts of wonderful things, doesn't play the old Simple
Beep in the same way.  It doesn't include a DIFFERENT sound,
just plays the old one in a new way.  Someone on Info-Mac
reported this as something to do with playing square waves
correctly.  Well I didn't like the "corrected" simple beep,
so I've sampled it the way it was.  Here for your enjoyment.

Unfortunately I felt I had to stop there because of the size of the group.
But I have over 30 megs of Simpsons sounds, with more every week, so hopefully
I'll be posting more groups. I'm considering posting the awesome closing music
to Treehouse of Horror IV (Addams Family mix). If you would like to see it let
me know. As were my other groups, these sounds are sfil, recorded at 11KHz.
The number-letter-number-number combo in brackets in each title is the

Here is yet another SoundTracker song.  This one is "Smells Like
Teen Spirit" by Nirvana (although I'd swear they stole the tune
>From Weird Al).  Its not a bad version, either.

This was taken from America Online.  They have a pretty extensive
collection of SoundTracker songs (in the Amiga and IBM sections)
but people are converting them to the Mac formats, so some have
also appear in the Mac sections.

SoundTracker needs a Mac with an 020/030/040 processor.

As a side note, if you discover any of these songs are bad,
please let me know.  A good number fail to even run (and are
not uploaded) and on occasion, a song may play for 11 seconds
and then stop (why?  I don't know.) ala Behind the Wheel of my
recent uploads.

However, if the songs are good... please also let me know.  I'd
just like to hear that people are enjoying them.

champagne," to which Julia Roberts responds (in her street-wise
street-walker tones), "Oh.  Groovy."
